Having the right name for your ecommerce store is critical to its success. The name needs to be catchy, easy to remember, set you apart from the competition, and represent your business well. Not having the right name from the start can be very costly. Here are some tips for how to choose a name for an e-commerce store.

Choosing the Perfect Name for Your Online Store

Choose a Flexible Name

The name that you choose should reflect what your business currently does, but at the same time, it should also remain relevant as your business grows and expands. Otherwise, the store name and the products may no longer match. For example, if you are starting out by selling one product and name your store after that one product, then your store name may no longer represent your brand well if you start adding many more products.

Using Your Own Name

Avoid using your name for an e-commerce store. A name like “Donna’s Shop” does not tell people what your online store is about. Also, if you decide to sell your store in the future, it can be more difficult to sell it since the people who may want to purchase it will probably not be named Donna. And they may not want to buy a business that is represented by someone else’s name.

Do Your Research

Before you get your heart set on a particular business name, brainstorm some ideas and check to see if your idea is available as a domain name, and also if it is available on the social media networks that you will want to use. If possible, choose a dot-com domain name and avoid using numbers and symbols in the name. Also, research your competition to make sure that you are not choosing a name that would infringe on the name of a competitor.

Keep it Short

Keep the name of your online store as short and easy as possible so that people will have no trouble typing it out, spelling it correctly, and remembering it. If possible, do not use hyphens in the name because this adds an extra element that would need to be remembered.

Get Creative

One way to keep the name short is to come up with a creative one-word name. An example is Shopify. Although it is not an actual name that you can find in a dictionary, it reduces the name of the business to something short and simple that is fun and easy to remember and spell. Another idea is to put two words together to create a new name. Some examples of companies that do this are MailChimp, HostGator, and NameCheap.

Consider SEO

If possible, choose a domain name that is both relevant to your business and will also help you to rank higher in the search engines. For example, if you have an e-commerce store that is focused on a particular niche, such as selling Kayaks, then it is helpful to have the word Kayak in your domain name. But if you have a more general store that sells various products, then you may have a more general name for your store.
