Why eCommerce Sites Must Avoid These SEO Errors

seo-errors

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has always and will continue to be, one of the primary means for eCommerce sites to increase traffic. That being said, SEO also plays a major role in increasing an eCommerce site’s sales.

If you’re new to eCommerce and you’re looking to use SEO to improve your site’s traffic, or if you’ve been in the industry for a while and would like to get more results with SEO, then you need to be aware of the following SEO errors.

Mistake #1. Not using enough text

Most eCommerce sites will have a bunch of photographs, maybe even videos, but you’ll notice that they hardly have text. It takes time and effort to write good content but if you want your site to be ranked by the search engines, you need to place specially crafted sentences and paragraphs that will let them know you exist and that you provide value.  Search engines love keywords so make sure that your site uses them.

Since eCommerce sites usually don’t have full-length articles, like blogs, the best place you can use text well is in the product descriptions or product reviews. Make sure that you describe your products using the keywords you’ve chosen.

Mistake #2. Copying/Pasting Product Descriptions

One of the most common SEO errors that many eCommerce sites make is to simply copy and paste product descriptions. They find products on Amazon, Aliexpress, or other sites and they’ll simply copy and paste a picture of the product and its description on their eCommerce site. While doing so may be an easy way to fill your site up with products and maybe sell a few of them, it is definitely the wrong way to encourage search engines to increase your site’s rank.

Keep in mind that search engines will rank sites that have unique content higher and will likely penalize sites that simply copy content from others. If you want to improve your rank on search engines, then take the time to write product descriptions that include your chosen keywords.

Mistake #3. Choosing the wrong keywords

It’s easy to pick keywords and use them in product descriptions, meta tags, and other SEO strategic locations, but are you using the right keywords? Do people actually use those keywords when searching for products of the same nature? It’s not enough to pick keywords simply because they somehow relate to the products you’re selling, you need to make sure that those keywords are actually being used.

Use SEO Wisely

As mentioned earlier, you need to use SEO wisely for it to benefit your online store. If you’re making any or most of the mistakes above, then instead of bringing you traffic like you want them to, search engines may likely be penalizing your site and driving you further down the rankings. If you don’t fully understand how SEO works, you might want to brush up on your SEO skills or hire an SEO specialist to help you.
